I. Dziedzictwo WXL (The Grand Dutchy of Lithuania)

Mieczysław Jackiewicz, Biblioteki Polskie w Republice Litewskiej 1919–1940

Polish Libraries in the Republic of Lithuania from 1919 to 1940
The article presents the history of Polish libraries in Lithuania, particularly those in Kaunas, Poniewież and Wiłkomierz. Firstly, it reviews the history of home
libraries and private collections in old manor houses of landed gentry, which played a significant cultural role during the time of Partitions. Secondly, it discusses the history of certain book collections during WW I. Finally, it concentrates on the interwar period, arguing that at that time Polish libraries in Lithuania were an important element of Polish identity in the oppressive political and social context.
Key words: readership, Poland, Lithuania, Polish libraries, history of education

Jarosław Ławski, Zygmunt Gloger: Prowincja jako centrum świata

Zygmunt Gloger: Province as the Centre of the World
The article presents Zygmunt Gloger – Polish ethnographer, archeologist, and writer from Podlasie – through the prism of the category of province. Province is here understood as the potential source of the inferiority complex, as well as an important element of identity, which can be easily made into an asset. Zygmunt Gloger’s works illustrate such a double perspective on his native land. The author of the article analyses Gloger’s views on social, political and cultural problems, emphasizing the fact that the nineteenth-century ethnographer would always look for solutions that could be found in his closest, provincial surroundings.
Key words: Zygmunt Gloger, the 19th century, province, centre, regionalism

Mateusz Preis, Administracja majątkiem Izabeli Branickiej w latach 1772–1783 z perspektywy sekretarza Piotra Piramowicza

Managing Izabela Branicka’s Assets in 1772–1783 from the Perspective of the Secretary Piotr Piramowicz
The article focuses on Branicki’s residence in Białystok, which was managed by Izabela Branicka from 1772 to 1808. Not only was it the time of significant changes in the way the residence functioned, but it began to play a different cultural role for the inhabitants of the region. The author of the article describes the circles of court officials and clerks, and the mechanisms of their managerial decisions as relayed in the correspondence of Piotr Piramowicz, Izabela Branicka’s secretary, a perceptive observer of everyday life in the residence. His letters give an exceptionally interesting description of the way the residence functioned in the final days of the Commonwealth.
Key words: Braniccy, Branicki Palace in Białystok, Piotr Piramowicz, history of Białystok, the 18th century

Aleksandra Kołodziejczak, Powstanie styczniowe w „Moich wspomnieniach” księcia Włodzimierza Mieszczerskiego

The January Uprising in Vladimir Meshchersky’s „My Memories”
Prince Vladimir Meshchersky (1839–1914), the grandson of Nicholas Karamzin, was one of the best-known people of the second half of the 19th century. He held a firm position among the group of conservatives who considered Poles as traitors of Slavs. After the death of Nicholas I, both in Russia and in Poland, the situation was verging on revolution. In St. Petersburg, Zygmunt Sierakowski, an acquaintance of Józefat Ohryzko from Karamzin family, played a significant role in uniting Polish people. Meshchersky mentions that Ogryzko supported the revolutionary aspirations of Russians and Poles. Poles were also supported by Alexander Herzen. In My Memories Herzen was presented in a bad light. The prince criticized the policy of St. Petersburg towards the Polish nation. For him, it was the main cause of the outbreak of the Polish revolt. The author of My Memories explains the context of the arrival of Konstanty Nikolaevich in Warsaw. Meshchersky believed that Ukrainians, Belarusians, Lithuanians were part of the Great Russia. Influenced by the revolutionary mood of society and fear of war with Europe, the Tsar appointed Мichal Muravyov as the Governor-General of Vilnius. Meshchersky was a fierce supporter of Muravyov and his dictatorship.
Key words: diaries, prince Mieszczerski, politics, the history of 19th century.

II. Konteksty literackie i historyczne (Literary and Historical Contexts)

Małgorzata Burzka-Janik, Estetyczne nowatorstwo poematów Tomasza Augusta Olizarowskiego – od „Zaweruchy” do „Car-dziewicy”

The Aesthetic Avant-Gardism of Tomasz August Olizarowski’s Poems: From „The Storm” to „The Tsar-Virgin”
The article presents an almost totally forgotten poet, playwright, November Uprising fighter and émigré – Tomasz August Olizarowski. Having carried out a research in the Polish Library in Paris, the author delves into the life and work of Olizarowski, focusing on his existing manuscripts and assessing the aesthetic value of his selected works. Particularly, the analysis concentrates on Ukrainian themes, as well as melancholy, macabre, grotesque and mysticism.
Key words: dark Romanticism, frenzy, aesthetics, mysticism, Tomasz August Olizarowski

Alberto Bonchino, Von Baader zu Schubert. Zur Bedeutung der Geognosie Werners für die Entwicklung einer romantischen Naturphilosophie

From Baader to Schubert: the influence of Werner’s geognosis on the development of romantic philosophy of nature
The article discusses two different yet complementary aspects of German culture at the dawn of Romanticism. It focuses on two cities: Freiberg and Dresden. Freiburg is the starting point, mentioned by the author in order to throw light on some fundamental questions of the philosophy of nature at the time of early German Romanticism. Between nature observation and self-reflection, between experience and speculation there emerged in Freiburg ways of thinking that related to the “enlightened rationality”; from 1788 to 1800 those ways of thinking transformed themselves into a form of an early Romantic version of theory of nature, enriched by the elements of magic and theosophy. Dresden, in turn, is evoked as the place where literature, philosophy of nature and visual arts initiated the first serious deliberations on the human soul and its dark psychological aspects, and came to be understood as the core of “proper” cultural reflection.
Key words: Schubert, Baader, early German Romanticism, late Enlightenment, study of nature

The article discusses four plays by contemporary Russian playwright Victor Shenderovich («Two Angels, Four humans», «Schweitzer’s Namesake», «Evening Departure of a Blind Society», «The Current») from the standpoint of their generic classification, authorial presentation, and story features. Analyzing the poetics of these works, we notice their satirical thrust and the absurdity of events.
Key words: comedy, the play-parable, satire, irony, the grotesque, theatre of the absurd, poetics, chronotope, simulacrum

Wybrane pierwiastki artyzmu w dramaturgii Wiktora Szenderowicza

W toku analizy poetyckiej tych dzieł zwrócono szczególną uwagę na satyrę i absurd toku zdarzeń.

Switłana Kahamłyk, Polskie wpływy na powstawanie i działalność ukraińskiej prawosławnej elity cerkiewnej czasów nowożytnych

Traces of Polish Influence on the Formation and Activities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Elite of Early Modernity
The article discusses traces of Polish influence on the formation and activities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church elite of early modernity. The primary forms of that influence came from the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Polish educational institutions, and private libraries including books both in Polish and Latin. The impact of Western thought can be seen in literary and theological texts of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church writers.
Key words: modern era, the Orthodox faith, Unitates, jesuits

Mateusz Skucha, Feminizm pozorny, albo jak mizogini walczyli o prawa kobiet

Fake Feminism, or How Misogynists Fought for Women’s Rights
The article looks at different stances that can be adopted in a discussion on women’s emancipation. The author concentrates on statements that apparently support
the cause but deep down harbour a devotion to patriarchal values, dislike for “female issues” or even ingrained prejudice, if not misogyny. The analysis of selected texts – notably by Cyprian Kamil Norwid and Stanisław Przyborowski – unveils remnants of ancient, biblical and naturalistic viewpoints in a seemingly progressive discourse. Such a rhetorical strategy, so is the contention, often changes emancipatory ideas into yet another form of oppression.
Key words: emancipation, feminism, female issues in the 19th century, patriarchal culture, naturalism

III. Regionalia (Regionalisms)

Maria Bauchrowicz-Tocka, Wydawcy i redaktorzy gazet i czasopism międzywojennej Łomży

Publishers and Editors of Newspapers and Magazines in the Interwar Łomża
The article presents the editors and publishers of the leading newspapers in the interwar Łomża. They made crucial decisions about the profile of the newspapers and magazines, and about their content. The creators of the press in Łomża were not professional journalists. They represented various professions: a doctor, a lawyer, a priest, a teacher. The editorial work was an extra activity for them and often complemented their political and social pursuits. Yet, the press they created is still a rich source of knowledge.
Key words: Łomża, history, years 1918–1939, the press

Irina Treń, Bibliotekarze niemieccy z Insterburga

German Librarians from Insterburg
The article focuses on part of the history of Library in Insterburg, featuring the biographies and profiles of its four outstanding workers: Artur Kopp – a classic philologist, university professor and folk songs collector; Fritz Rhode – a historian, director of the University Library in Marburg; Clara Nast – a writer of books for children; and Roswithy Poll – a specialist in librarianship, former director of the University Library in Erlangen.
Key words: Insterburg, librarianship, history of libraries, Artur Kopp, Fritz Rhode, Clara Nast, Roswitha Poll.

IV. Polemiki (Polemics)

Stanisław Siess-Krzyszkowski, Wacław Walecki, O potrzebie akrybii bibliograficznej

In Need of Bibliographical Scrupulousness
The article takes issue with two reviews of the Catalogue of Sapiecha family from Krasiczyn Library: by Michał Choptiany and by Piotr Trafiłowski. In the midst of his discussion concerning particulars, the author argues for assuming a much broader perspective – one that would take into consideration the problems of local libraries. One of the main flaws of the catalogue – lack of the information on history of the collection – is connected with the absence of primary sources.
Key words: bibliographies, library catalogues, review, polemics
