Digitalization in Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. Experience and Perspectives
The authors discuss the influence of new information technologies on the work of libraries. Particularly, they refer to the problem of digitalization of collections, which is the greatest challenge for European libraries in the years to come. The article looks closely at the process of digitalization that has been initiated at Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in Vilnius: the development of databases that utilize the system ALEPH 500, the development and organization of collections (creating archives), and the cooperation with other institutions (library consortiums) so as to build up a digital library available to everybody.

Not only does the author point to various levels of the cooperation, from the local to the international, providing characteristic features of each one, but she also highlights all the factors that slow down the process of consolidating the libraries. There are numerous advantages of the system: its flexibility, versatility, and adaptability to the management of different data. The author mentions the possibility of cataloguing all the information and sources (texts, graphics) related to the academic staff with a view to carrying out an assessment of their academic achievements. Jerzy Paszek, S/Z, czyli smak i zapach w „Żywych kamieniach” i „Wietrze od morza” Stefana Żeromskiego
S/Z, or Taste and Smell in ‘Living Stones’ and ‘Wind from the Sea’
The author presents a new analytical interpretation of Stefan Żeromski’s two novels: Living Stones and Wind from the Sea. The texts are interpreted through the
prism of thematological examination, in which the main focus is “senses” (and the springboard for all theoretical deliberations being S/Z by Roland Barthes). Two types of aesthetic experience seem to be of particular importance in both works: the gustatory and the olfactory. The affinity that links both novels is signalled in their titles and is further confirmed in the stories themselves.

The Aesthetics of Stefan Żeromski’s ‘The Rose’
The author of the article proposes a new reading of Stefan Żeromski’s drama The Rose. Originally, the text was an attempt to diagnose Polish society after the revolution of 1905, and – formally – it resembled major Polish romantic dramas.Taking this context into account, the author of the article looks at Żeromski’s drama through the prisms of both romantic transcendental poetry and twentiethcentury avant-garde theatre. The key to the interpretation of The Rose turns out to be the recognition of its being a drama that records a superindividual, total experience.

III. Konteksty literaturoznawcze i historyczne (Literary and Historical Contexts)
A Lvivian Manuscript of ‘The Required Plants’ by Krzysztof Kluk
The article concerns the manuscript Roślin potrzebnych by Krzysztof Kluk (1739-1796), which was discovered at the Baworowscy Library in Lviv. Krzysztof Kluk was a priest, a natural science researcher, and a member of the Commission of National Education. One of his manuscripts which for years had been considered missing, now appears to have been recovered. The author of this article assumes that the manuscript must have been written by two original authors. One of them was most probably Kluk himself, while the other may have been one of Kluk’s associates. The second part of this article collates the manuscript and the first edition of “Roślin potrzebnych” (ed. 1777). The study shows that the manuscript is certainly not a copy of the first edition and that it indeed is the script of Kluk’s book. It also presents the changing process of writing “Roślin potrzebnych”.
