Małgorzata Korczyńska-Derkacz, Ideologiczne aspekty kształtowania zasobów bibliotek szkolnych i pedagogicznych w Polsce w okresie powojennym (1946–1955)

The role of ideology in creating collections of school and pedagogical libraries in post-war Poland (1946-1955)
The article shows rules and criteria for creating collections of school and pedagogical libraries in the first post-war decade in Poland. The scholarly basis for such a study were documents from The State Archive in Warsaw and The Archive of New Acts in Warsaw that, at the time, were addressed to librarians. The documents emphasized the role of books and libraries in shaping the minds of children and young people in accordance with Marxist ideology and materialistic world view.
Key words: Polish library collections, libraries, pedagogy, marxism

Jadwiga Sadowska, Cenzura PRL i czytelnicy wobec twórczości Marii Rodziewiczówny

The attitude of censorship in the People’s Republic of Poland towards Maria Rodziewiczówna’s oeuvre
The article shows archival documents from the period 1945-1954 related to the official policy assumed by so-called selecting committees of public libraries towards Maria Rodziewiczówna’s oeuvre. Rodziewiczówna’s literature was closely connected with the tradition of gentry and folk culture in the Eastern Borderlands. After WWII, when the area was annexed by the Soviet Union, the writer’s books – because of their subject matter – came to be considered as ideologically pernicious: nationalistic, chauvinistic, anti-Soviet, anti-revolutionary, and even fascist or nihilistic. After such an assessment, more than half of the writer’s oeuvre was ordered to be withdrawn from libraries. Drawing on readers’ surveys organized in the 1940s, 1970s and 1990s, the article also presents general interest in Rodziewiczówna’s books. On the basis of the statistical yearbook “Ruch Wydawniczy w Liczbach”, it gives exact figures concerning the editions of the writer’s books in post-war Poland.
Key words: Maria Rodziewiczówna, history of readership, censorship, communism, the People’s Republic of Poland

Andrzej Smolarczyk, Biblioteki i czytelnie oświatowe w województwie poleskim w latach 1919-1939

Libraries and educational reading rooms in Polesie province in 1919-1939
The article looks at the development of readership and educational activities in libraries and reading rooms in Polesie in 1919-1939, i.e. at the time when lack of
book collections was one of the biggest problems in education. The problem, let us add, which affected other provinces in the Eastern borderlands as well. Among intervening measures taken at the time there were: book-collecting campaigns all over Poland, promotion of readership, development of library network (both public and private), and launching the Polish Society for the Eastern Borderlands.
Key words: readership, Polish libraries, education, Polesie, the interwar period, the Eastern borderlands.

Grzegorz Trościński, „Icones Mortis” – emblematy Georgiusa Aemiliusa i Hansa Holbeina w nieznanym polskim przekazie z XVIII wieku. Z dziejów toposu tańca śmierci w Polsce

„Icones Mortis” – Emblems of Georgius Aemilius and Hans Holbein in a recently discovered eighteenth-century polish source. History of the dance of death topos in Poland
The article looks at a newly discovered set of poetic inscriptions handwritten on the pages of Georgius Aemilius’ and Hans Holbein’s emblematic work Icones Mortis… published in Lyon in 1547. The original print is deposited at the Diocesan Library in Sandomierz. The thirty-two ‘extras’ in Polish were in all probability added in the second half of the eighteenth century by, as the author of the article assumes, Tomasz Aleksander Małyszka. The texts constitute a missing link between old Polish realizations of the danse macabre motif and Daniel Chodowiecki’s cycle composed during the period of Polish Enlightenment. The article analyses the image of death and its grotesque elements that were so characteristic of the late Baroque. The discovered set of poetic inscriptions confirms that emblems were quite popular in the second half of the eighteenth century; what is more, it is the only example in old Polish literature of a creative dialogue with Aemilius Holbein’s Renaissance work
Key words: monuments of literature, emblems, images of Death, motif of danse macabre

II. Konteksty literaturoznawcze i historyczne (Literary and Historical Contexts of Book Science)

Natalia Sowtys, Pisana po polsku literatura ukraińska w kontekście fenomenu kulturowego polsko-ukraińskiego pogranicza

Ukrainian literature written in Polish in the context of the Polish-Ukrainian borderlines
The article reviews the peculiarities of the origin and development of Ukrainian literature written in Polish. Literary works of authors from the Ukrainian-Polish borderlands of the ХVІ-ХVІII centuries are also taken into consideration. The particular attention is paid to the literary works of the ХІХ century Polish language writers who were preoccupied with sociopolitical and linguistic-cultural transformations. The article clearly demonstrates that the bilingual borderlands literature belongs both to Ukrainian and Polish culture.
Key words: borderlands, bilingualism, Polish-language, literary language

Halina Krukowska, Cykliczność „Sonetów krymskich” Adama Mickiewicza w świetle Gastona Bachelarda koncepcji czasu poetyckiego

The cyclical nature of Adam Mickiewicz’s „The Crimean Sonnets” in the light of Gaston Bachelard’s concept of poetic time
The article arranges in order and discusses all critical studies on Adam Mickiewicz’s The Crimean Sonnets published so far, highlighting various, often controversial opinions. Drawing on Gaston Bachelard’s concept of poetic time, the author proposes her own methodological approach to the work of the great Polish Romantic poet. What is given prominence in her critical analysis is the relation between poetry (and poetic mood) and description (descriptiveness) – the problem particularly significant in the context of The Crimean Sonnets. Taking issue with the scholars who read Mickiewicz’s sonnets as a form of descriptive text, the author – following Bachelard – presents the cycle as an example of pure poetry that avoids descriptive functions.
Key words: Polish Romanticism, Crimea, poetic imagination, sonnet, Adam Mickiewicz, Gaston Bachelard

Wiesław Wróbel, Ile loży masońskiej w „loży masońskiej”? Uzupełnienia do historii budynku przy ul. Kilińskiego 16 – siedziby Książnicy Podlaskiej

How much of masonic lodge in the ‘masonic lodge’? A footnote to the history of Książnica Podlaska’s premises – 16 Kilińskiego Street

The author presents the history of one of Białystok’s most characteristic buildings – Książnica Podlaska’s premises, 16 Kilińskiego Street. The article reviews the building’s rich documentation, its fascinating history, and – most importantly – it revises some popular fallacies: for example, the claim that the building used to be the Masonic Lodge’s premises. In his examination, the author draws on the tradition of historical investigation, contemporary regionalism and theory of geopoetics.
Key words: Białystok, architecture, history, regionalism, Książnica Podlaska, freemasonry
